Cheapest cities to live in Europe 2026: where your salary actually goes the distance

Europe is still the default move for expats and remote workers, but the price spread is brutal. A salary that barely covers rent in London will fund a proper life in Valencia or Malaga. Knowing where your money lands hardest takes more than a national average.

Southern Spain and mid-size German cities keep topping the affordability list. Rent is reasonable, groceries and transport are cheaper than the capitals, and the savings math on a European salary finally works.

We calculate affordability from published sources: tax authorities for income tax, national statistical offices for consumer prices, and housing indices for rent. Every figure on this page came from a government publication. None of it is guessed.

One thing to watch: single-number city comparisons lie to you. Rent swings 40 to 60 percent between neighborhoods in the same city. The calculator lets you see that spread so you can match the neighborhood to the budget.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest city to live in Europe in 2026?

On government data, cities in Spain and mid-size German cities keep coming out on top once you add up rent, groceries, transport, and utilities. The calculator will give you the exact neighborhood numbers for your salary.

How much does it cost to live in Europe as an expat?

It swings hard. In an affordable European city, a single person can live well under EUR 1,500 a month including rent. In London or Paris, the same life starts around EUR 3,000. Our data breaks the spread down by neighborhood so the number you see is the one you would actually pay.

Is Eastern Europe still cheaper than Western Europe in 2026?

Usually, yes. But the gap has closed. Spanish and Southern European cities now match some Eastern European capitals on cost once you factor in infrastructure quality and how far English will get you.

Does AffordWhere use Numbeo data?

No. We use government tax data, national statistical offices (Eurostat, SCB, Destatis, ONS, INSEE), and verified housing indices. Nothing crowdsourced, nothing from Numbeo.
