AffordWhere is designed to be as privacy-friendly as possible:

• No accounts or sign-ups. You never need to register.
• Browser-based calculations. Salary and budget calculations run in your browser. If you open or create an exact result link, the scenario is included in that URL as explained below.
• Privacy-conscious analytics. First-party product events exclude exact financial values. Microsoft Clarity runs only after you explicitly allow optional analytics, and private scenario URLs are excluded.
• No advertising tracking. Clarity advertising storage remains disabled. We do not serve ads on AffordWhere.
• No data selling. We do not sell personal data.

Calculator inputs and exact-result links

When you use the calculator, you enter:

• Gross salary / partner salary
• Living arrangement preferences
• Lifestyle priorities
• Origin country and destination choices

Salary and financial calculations are processed in your browser using client-side JavaScript.Some preferences are stored in your browser's localStorage so the calculator can remember them. When you open or deliberately share an exact result, the share link contains a reversible encoded copy of that scenario. The URL can include salary, partner salary, family choices, origin, or portfolio information. Anyone with the link can decode it, and the URL is transmitted to our hosting provider as part of the normal page request. Do not share an exact-result link if you consider that scenario confidential.

Data our servers receive

Like any website, when you visit AffordWhere our hosting provider (Vercel) automatically receives:

• Your IP address
• Browser type and version
• Device type and operating system
• Pages visited, including URL query strings, and timestamps
• Referring URL (if you clicked a link to reach us)

This is standard server log data that all websites receive. It is collected by our hosting provider (Vercel) for infrastructure and security purposes.

First-party product analytics

To understand how AffordWhere is used and where people get stuck, we collect anonymous product events such as page views, destination searches, selected countries/cities, onboarding step completion, results sections and spokes viewed, share/settings clicks, referrer, approximate session duration, browser language, timezone, and viewport size.

We store a temporary anonymous session ID in sessionStorage so events from the same browser tab can be grouped into one journey. It is not a cookie, is not shared with advertisers, and disappears when the tab session ends.

Microsoft Clarity behavioral analytics

If you explicitly allow optional analytics, we use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use and interact with public AffordWhere pages through behavioral metrics, heatmaps, and session replay. Clarity helps us identify confusing flows, broken layouts, and product areas that need improvement.

Clarity may capture mouse movements, clicks, scrolls, page navigation, device and browser details, referrers, timestamps, and pages viewed. Input fields and sensitive content are masked by default before being uploaded to Clarity. Private scenario URLs are excluded, the tracked document ends before personalized result navigation, and Clarity does not receive exact salary, partner salary, portfolio value, or encoded scenario identifiers from those result pages.

Microsoft may collect and use this usage data under the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Legal basis for Clarity (GDPR): Consent (Article 6(1)(a)). You can decline without losing any calculator functionality and withdraw consent through Analytics preferences in the footer.

• Exact salary, partner salary, portfolio value, or encoded scenario identifiers in first-party product analytics or Microsoft Clarity
• Names, email addresses, or phone numbers (unless you email us directly)
• Location or GPS data
• Biometric data
• Data from third-party sources

We do not serve ads or sell personal data. Our first-party analytics uses sessionStorage for a temporary anonymous session ID and does not store exact salary or financial values. Microsoft Clarity is optional and remains off until you allow it.

Microsoft Clarity cookies and tracking technologies

After consent, Clarity may use cookies and similar technologies to understand activity on eligible public pages. We pass analytics storage as granted and advertising storage as denied. Declining prevents the Clarity script from loading. Withdrawing consent sends a denied signal and reloads the page without Clarity.

Browser localStorage

To make the calculator usable across visits, inputs such as salary, city selections, and lifestyle choices may be saved in localStorage. The stored copy stays on your device. Exact-result and share URLs are a separate mechanism and may contain a reversible encoded scenario.

Clearing storage manually

• Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear Browsing Data → Cookies and Site Data
• Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
• Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data

Legal basis for first-party analytics (GDPR): Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)) — measuring aggregate product usage without exact financial values or advertising identifiers. Clarity uses consent as described above.

We do not serve ads on AffordWhere and do not sell personal data.

If we add affiliate partnerships (e.g., money transfer services) in the future, we will update this policy and clearly disclose them before activation.

Our website is hosted on Vercel, which operates servers in multiple regions including the United States. When you visit AffordWhere, standard server log data (IP address, browser info) may be processed in the US.

This transfer is covered by Vercel's Data Processing Agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).

Normal calculations run in your browser. Exact-result URLs are transmitted to Vercel and can contain a reversible encoded scenario. Those private scenario URLs are excluded from Microsoft Clarity and from first-party product analytics payloads.

• localStorage (your device): Stored until you clear it manually. We have no access to it.
• Server logs (Vercel): Automatically deleted per Vercel's retention policy (typically 30 days).
• First-party analytics events: Kept for product analysis and periodically reviewed for deletion once no longer needed.
• Microsoft Clarity: Microsoft currently retains ordinary playback data for 30 days and aggregated click/heatmap data for up to 9 months.
• Emails: If you contact us at hello@affordwhere.com, we retain your email for as long as needed to respond, then delete it.

For all users:

• Clear your data: Delete localStorage through your browser settings at any time
• Access: Contact us to ask what data (if any) we hold about you
• Erasure: Contact us to request deletion of any data we may hold
• Object: Contact us to object to processing of server log data
• Withdraw analytics consent: Open Analytics preferences in the footer and choose Do not allow

Additional rights for EEA/UK residents (GDPR):

• Right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority
• Right to data portability (though we hold minimal data)
• Right to restriction of processing

Additional rights for California residents (CCPA/CPRA):

• Right to know what personal information we collect (detailed in this policy)
• Right to delete your personal information
• Right to opt-out of sale — we do NOT sell your personal information
• Right to non-discrimination for exercising your rights

AffordWhere is a salary and cost of living calculator designed for adults planning career moves and relocations. It is not intended for users under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your salary and financial data never travels over the internet — it stays in your browser. For the minimal server log data our hosting provider receives, all connections use HTTPS/TLS encryption.

AffordWhere provides estimates for informational purposes only. Tax calculations, rent prices, and cost of living figures are approximations based on publicly available data and may not reflect your actual situation. We are not financial advisors. Always verify figures with local tax authorities and do your own research before making relocation decisions.

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top. Since we don't collect email addresses, we cannot notify you directly — please check this page periodically.
